According to official sources here today, an abandoned suitcase was noticed by the shopkeepers of Circular Road area of Dimapur who informed the personnel of the 164 (TA) Naga regiment on Road Opening Patrol (ROP) duty and after sometime, police along with TA jawans, arrived at the site. The Army personnel later defused the bomb kept inside the abandoned suitcase.
However, the Police Bomb Disposal Squad claimed that their team did not detect any kind of explosive inside the briefcase. The 24 Assam Rifles personnel, the police and the army cordoned off the area prior to the disposal of the briefcase. The Army said as per the standard procedure, a sniffer dog was pressed into service and it confirmed presence of a suspicious item inside the briefcase. The bomb squad then covered the briefcase with low intensity explosives which was detonated during late evening. Later, the Army Bomb Squad collected the debris for further investigation. Sources said that Army suspected that the briefcase contained an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) inside, but were not able to establish it beyond doubt and therefore, took no chance and disposed it off by destroying it with a low intensity explosive.
