The Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), while taking a serious note about the power failure in the district, is enforcing an indefinite agitation in this regard.
TKS office bearers disclosed that as a means to protest the apathetic attitude of the power department to redress the grievances of the public, the TKS has closed down the Ukhrul Electricity Department and its sub-station Offices located at Hundung Cement factory and also its AE Office in Ukhrul.
However, a source from the Ukhrul EE electricity Department, today disclosed that the concern Office is in touch with the Chief Engineer, Imphal and that serious measures are in process to overcome the power crisis in Ukhrul. The source disclosed that the power crisis is “due to the over-loaded burden of power to the existing horse power strength of 3.15 MVA which is too less” to suffice the power needed by the citizens in Ukhrul and unless it is up-graded the crisis would not be solved.
The source also disclosed that Ukhrul has been facing the power shortage since 2003. A routine for load-shedding from 5:00am -6:00am, 3:30-5:00pm daily was being practiced, however, ‘rapid increase of power loading in the district has automatically compelled the present power shortage in Ukhrul. There is “off-power all the time”.
Considering the effect of the power problem in Ukhrul life, it is well experience that all the electronic and mechanical battery system gadgets like mobile phones, inverters computers and Television are non-operational. And even it very difficult to find a way to report any news for media men but fortunately for this Ukhrul based reporter, he was able to find 3- litres of Kerosene from a private friend and could complete his work.
