This was highlighted by Trevor Newsom, international adviser to the president and vice-chancellor of the university, in a meeting with chief minister Neiphiu Rio and senior officials last evening at the chief minister’s official residence. M. Satish Kumar, director, India Initiative, QUB, was also present in the meeting.
Their visit to the state came after the visit of a delegation of government and reporters from Nagaland to Northern Ireland in November. Trevor Newsom mentioned that since university had a wide network with different universities across the world, it has a strong tradition of entrepreneurship and was recently awarded the UK Entrepreneurial University of the Year, in 2009. He said the university was seeking ways to help India in increasing accessibility to higher education, which is suitable to the country’s economy.
Referring to the similarities between Northern Ireland and Nagaland, Newsom said the university was keen to work with Nagaland in the process to take away the dependency and help the state to rebound.
He highlighted areas where the university could offer partnerships with the state such as training of new academic staff, assisting in university administration and building up capacities.
Rio thanked the university’s officials for their visit to the state saying such partnerships would do wonders, especially for the region.
He said though Naga society was a young one, people are moving ahead and Naga people have the capability to learn fast.
Stating that Naga youths were very progressive and keen to become global citizens, Rio welcomed the prospect of forging such partnerships.
Referring to the Nagas’ love of music, he said this area could also be promoted through partnerships. Also present at the meeting were MLA and adviser, music task force, Nicky Kire, chief secretary Lalthara, additional chief secretary and development commissioner Alemtemshi Jamir, additional chief secretary and finance commissioner Toshi Aier, besides senior officials of departments concerned and representatives of Nagaland University.
