Resignations of 7 Naga MLAs accepted

IMPHAL, May 13 – The resignations of the seven Independent Naga MLAs have been finally accepted by the Manipur Assembly Speaker today.

On May 6, the day two students got killed and several others were injured in the Mao Gate security forces firing, the Independent Naga MLAs had faxed a joint resignation letter to the Manipur Assembly Speaker from New Delhi. They reasoned that their move had been prompted by the fact that the Manipur Government had barred the entry of NSCN-IM leader Th Muivah to Ukhrul in Manipur.

In that resignation letter the MLAs had also cited the Mao Gate killings for which they had resigned on moral ground.

However, the Assembly Speaker did not accept their resignation saying that the MLAs ought to fulfill the formalities to complete the resignation process. The seven Naga MLAs whose resignations have been accepted today include W Morung Makunga, Awangbow Newmei, K Raina, Dr Khashim Ruivah, M Thohrii, Wungnaoshang Keishing and Danny Shaiza.
