Naga panel ‘invites’ talks

Imphal, May 13 : The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) has initiated discussions on an invitation by the Kohima-based Co-ordination Committee of Naga Civil Society for holding talks to find an amicable solution to the crisis arising out of Th. Muivah’s plan to visit Manipur.

The Naga committee extended the invitation addressed to the presidents of United Committee Manipur (UCM) and AMUCO, an apex body of citizens’ groups, in an open letter published in an Imphal-based newspaper today.

The invitation signed by committee’s convenor, Neingulo Krome, said in view of the unrest between the ‘respective communities’, the Naga civil society organisations extended this letter for a discussion to explore all possible options of finding an amicable solution, so as to restore normality.

“Towards this endeavour and also faced with the challenges of time constrains, I am resorting to faster means of communication through the media to extend this invitation for a meeting to be held between leaders of United Committee of Manipur and All Manipur United Clubs Organisation with that of the Naga civil society organisations under the aegis of the Co-ordination Committee of Naga Civil Society organisations, which was formed to address the present crisis,” the invitation said.

The proposed meeting is scheduled to be held in Guwahati at 3pm tomorrow.

“We have read the invitation in the form of an open letter. We have also started discussion whether to accept the invitation or not. But we have not taken any decision as of today whether to accept it or not,” a spokesman for the AMUCO said.

No leader of the UCM was available for reaction to the invitation.

Naga bodies today urged the Centre to intervene into the Manipur situationand warned that things would worsen if Delhi did not act immediately to diffuse the volatile situation.

In a joint statement, the Untied Naga Council, Naga Women’s Union, Manipur, All Naga Students Association, Manipur and Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights alleged that Manipur’s forces had terrorised people in the Mao area since May 2.

The state’s main Opposition, Manipur Peoples Party (MPP), today squarely blamed the Centre for the present situation in Manipur.

“The Centre is backing Muivah’s plan to visit Manipur. Therefore, the responsibility for what has been happening in Manipur should be borne by the Centre,” MPP president Nimaichand Luwang said here today.

Tangkhul Aze Longphang, on the other hand, has condemned the destruction of properties of bus passengers belonging to the Naga community by protesters at Yairipok yesterday.

In another development, suspected cadres of the NSCN (I-M) looted goods worth over Rs 10 lakh from more than 10 vehicles coming towards Imphal from the Moreh border township of Thamnapokpi last night.
