Kohima | September 18 : A three day long Kohima District Inter-Government Higher Secondary Schools/Government High Schools Tournament got underway here today at the Indira Gandhi Stadium with parliamentary secretary for horticulture R. Khing as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Khing called upon the sports lovers to take games and sports as their profession and bring fame and glory to the state.
He asserted that good sportsperson gain more popularity than even powerful politicians. Khing said the DAN government under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has been giving special attention towards the promotion of games and sports by extending numerous facilities and infrastructures for sports lovers to explore their talents.
He also stated that the state got affiliation with the Indian Olympic Association where it has qualified for National Games. Through this, he said, many sportsperson are excelling and bringing medals to the state at the regional and national level. “It is a great sign for Naga sport lovers,” Khing said adding that a time has come for Naga youth to fully expose their talents.
Recalling the past days when there were no facility /infrastructure, no playground, no connectivity and accommodation for sports lovers to compete even at the district level, the parliamentary secretary termed today’s youth as the “luckiest batch” as adequate facilities and infrastructure are now around them.
He urged upon the sports lovers to take advantage of the available opportunities and excel in different disciplines. He also encouraged the participants to maintain discipline saying discipline is the key to success and bridge the gap. Also stating that the neighbouring state Manipur has already established popularity in the field of games and sports, he opined that provided the sports lovers give due attention, they can also do like them and even better.
Zaveyi Nyekha, District Education Officer, Kohima said that 12 schools under Kohima district are taking part in the tournament. The winners in athletics, football and volleyball will represent the district at the forthcoming Inter- district GHSS/GHS tournament in Dimapur. The tournament will go on till September 19.
