Over 300 Naga encroachers evicted, none hurt

JORHAT: Over 300 houses of Naga encroachers were damaged during a massive eviction drive by the Karbi Anglong district administration along the Assam-Nagaland border on Saturday. No one was injured in the firing that took place between the security forces and the encroachers.

The eviction drive happened at Doldoli forest reserve, near the Dimapur district of Nagaland, where hundreds of Naga encroachers occupied forest lands.

"We deployed a strong group of civil and security officials. Over 300 houses were removed during the day-long operation. Barring a few small incidents, the eviction drive was successful. We think this has been the biggest drive of this kind in the last few years," said Karbi Anglong district magistrate Prasanta Kumar Buragohain.

Three executive magistrates, CRPF, security staffs of four border outposts, Assam forest staffs, carried out the eviction process at Lahorijan, Kachijan and Rongapahar area inside the forest reserve.

Buragohain added that earlier district administration took up similar drives in the same areas and evicted 10-15 houses at a time. However, the encroachers would rebuild their houses in the same area.

"We noticed that the encroachment attempts have become faster and in the past few months they occupied a vast portion of forest land. So we took up this eviction drive," said Buragohain.
