Nagaland on urban fast lane

Census 2011 reveals high rate of development in state

Kohima, Aug. 6 : The recently concluded census 2011 in Nagaland published today showed a high rate of urbanisation in the state at 28.97 per cent, which is almost on a par with the rate of urbanisation in the country, that stands at 31.16 per cent.

“The 2011 census has been an important exercise for the state and the data collected during the census operation will help in the crucial planning of Nagaland,” minister for urban development and higher technical educationShürhozelie Liezietsu said.

He released the Provisional Population Total Paper-2 (Volume 1) at Hotel Japfü this afternoon.

The minister said it was heartening to know that the literacy rate in the urban areas in the state was 90.21 per cent, which was well above the national literacy rate.

He said the data released today revealed the fast pace of urbanisation.

The minister said a few decades ago this would have been unimaginable, but now it was heartening to note that as the pace of development escalated, the urban centres have also increased in Nagaland.

Census 2011 reported the presence of 19 statutory towns and seven census towns, which is in sharp contrast to eight statutory towns and three census towns reported in census 2001 in Nagaland.

The increase of 11 statutory towns and six census towns in one decade reveals the fast pace of urban development in Nagaland. “The literacy rate for urban areas, which has been recorded at 84.98 per cent is good and reflect well on the human resource potential of Nagaland. But it also means that the government must create more employment opportunities to absorb the skilled manpower,” he said.

“This responsibility must not rest with the government alone but the people of Nagaland must encourage all entrepreneurship and creative ventures, which will help in channelling skills and knowledge,” he added.

Liezietsu said the data would go a long way in formulating the blueprint for Nagaland’s future development. Earlier, the director of census operations of Nagaland, V. Hekali Zhimomi, presented a PowerPoint presentation on Rural-Urban Distribution of Population of Census 2011.

Deputy director, census operations, Nagaland, Nungsang Aier, chaired the programme and Imkongnungsang, additional director, census operations, delivered the vote of thanks.

Additional chief secretary and commissioner of Nagaland, Banuo Z. Jamir, and representatives from various Naga organisations and hohos, student leaders and civil societies attended the programme.
