Naga women applaud reservation

Kohima, July 14 : An Angami women’s organisation, Angamimiapfü Mechü Krotho (AMK), has called for early implementation of the provision for reservation for women in the Nagaland Municipal Act so that they can have greater participation in building the Naga society.

“The apex body of Angami women has deep appreciation towards leaders of the state government for having incorporated provision of reserved elected seats for women in the Nagaland Municipal Act. We stand in solidarity with the Naga women in voicing their concern for early implementation of the act,” the organisation’s president, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, said.

However, several organisations have come out against 33 per cent reservation for women in municipal and town councils stating that this would infringe into the customary and traditional practices of the Naga society.

“Though the act has been passed in favour of women, which is a welcome step taken by the state government, till today it has not been implemented,” Kruse said.

“No nation can progress and achieve goals of equitable development if the high resources in women — their energy, skills, knowledge, drive and enthusiasm are ignored and kept unutilised,” she added.

The Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation today said it would support the implementation of the 33 per cent Women’s Reservation Bill in all towns and municipal councils in accordance with the Municipal Amendment Act 2006.

The Action Committee on Women Reservation has filed a writ petition in Gauhati High Court, which will be heard on Friday.
