Addressing the state level seminar on 'Atrocities Against Women' here, governor Nikhil Kumar urged legislators to evolve stringent laws for better protection of women not only in the state, but throughout the country. Kumar asserted on the need for legislation all over the world to bring about greater realization of complete safety of women.
Atrocities against women is a worldwide phenomenon and important national and international organizations have put in a lot of effort in bringing about greater equality between men and women in order to do away with gender discrimination, but the menace continues to prevail, the governor said. "It hurts that despite tall statements made by various international leaders, we keep hearing of women being harassed sexually, economically, socially and physically," the governor said.
Some 117 countries have equal pay laws, 173 countries have guaranteed paid maternity leave and 117 countries have outlawed sexual harassment at work places, but the problem of female harassment persists, the governor pointed out.
Gender discrimination is the root cause of all evils against women, he said, stressing on the need of gender equality in the society, where women are treated as mothers, aunts and sisters and live a fearless life with their fundamental rights being upheld.
