Naga archer Chekrovolu qualifies for London Olympics

Kohima, Jul 14 : Ace Naga archer Chekrovolu Swuro, who was part of Silver Medal winning effort of the India women's team at the World Championships at Turin in Italy, has booked her berth for the London Olympics in 2012.

Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) Secretary Abu Metha said in a heartbreak final, Indian trio lost to their Italian opponents 207-210 though they had a one-point lead at the half-way stage.

He said Swuro’s is a landmark achievement in Naga sports as it is perhaps the first ever world championships medal in an Olympic event by any Naga sportsperson.

He further said Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who is also the president of the NOA, conveyed his congratulations to the ace archer and is awaiting official confirmation of the results from the Archery Federation of India before issuing a statement.

Moreover, the world championship is still underway and a number of events are yet to be held.

The Indian women’s team has qualified by virtue of its podium finish, however, the final team selection for the Indian Archery Team for the Olympic Games will be held on the eve of the Olympics as is the norm with most team events across all disciplines.

Despite slight confusion, the fact remains that Chekrovolü has reached a level where no other Naga sportsperson has reached before in any Olympic sport.

Several Nagas have won medals at worldcups or world championships in other disciplines, especially in martial arts, but this is perhaps an unique achievement as her medal has come in a legitimate world championship in an internationally recognised Olympic discipline.

Mr Metha said on confirmation, Chekrovolü will receive the State Sports Award which is Rs three Lakh, Rs two Lakh and Rs one Lakh for gold, silver and bronze medal at a recognized world championship event respectively.

Meanwhile, in response to some questions being raised in certain quarters, he informed that the state government has been extending assistance to archery in every possible way, including to Chekrovolü in the past.

Chevrovolu is presently an officer in the Nagaland police, an appointment awarded to her for her sporting achievements.
