Nagaland police held 1 for cyber crime

Kohima, Mar 27 : In the first ever cyber crime case registered in Nagaland, Dimapur police arrested a person for posting obscene pictures of a Naga girl on a popular social networking site.

Official sources here today said the accused identified as one Shashwat Kumar (25), a merchant navy cadet, was arrested on Friday evening upon his arrival from Mumbai at the Kolkata airport by Dimapur police personnel.

Sources said Shashwat is a student of T S Chanakya and a resident of Patna, is the lone son of a high profile academician Dr Shiva Jatan Thakur.

The accused was arrested following the victim lodged an FIR with East Police Station at Dimapur on March 16.

Sources said the accused had admitted to the police of hacking into the victim’s e-mail ID and had mailed her nude pictures on the site, as she had refused to marry him.

A list of evidences such as the laptop of the accused and conversations recorded over mobile phone were also obtained by the police.

The conversations were converted into proper format by experts of Cyber Forensic Experts of the Regional Institute of e-learning and Information Technology at Kohima.

Police further investigating how the pictures were taken and uploaded on the networking site.

He was produced at the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate today and taken into police remand for seven days.

It may be noted that for cyber related crimes there is no jurisdiction for police to apprehend those booked under the ITAA, 2008, with that power Dimapur police was able to apprehend the culprit at Kolkata.
