Nagaland all set to prepare HDR at district level

KOHIMA, May 30: Nagaland is all set to prepare its first district level human development reports (HDR) since it becomes mandatory for each State to review millennium development goal set by UNDP.

But to prepare a proper District HDRs the government needs correct data on district GDP and related district level statistics in many areas collected through proper sampling technique and tools, additional chief secretary and development commissioner Alemtemshi Jamir said.

In his key-note address at a two-day workshop on data collection and improvement of statistical system with special emphasis on State domestic product for strengthening State plan for human development, he lamented that the entire statistical works in Nagaland went haywire due various factors and emphasised on corrective measures for proper planning and improvement of human development indices.

The development commissioner pointed out that the government has been preparing State as well as district plans on the basis of 2001 census data or on their projections which were grossly erroneous since statistics are compiled in Nagaland on political considerations of an MLA constituency compromising true picture of a locality. Besides the fallacy in data collection, erroneous techniques and tools had been followed in compilation of various indices like states GDP, net domestic product, per capita income, consideration of base year, current price, constant price, he said and insisted on corrective measures.

Parliamentary Secretary for Economics and Statistics and IPR, R Tohanba stressed on focusing on sound statistical system which is indispensable for creating reliable statistical data in the state.

Pointing out that a strong statistical system is fundamental for formulation of economic policies and programmes, he said it actually provides indicators on performance of the economy, forming a basis for projection for future development. – PTI
