Nagaland is located in the North Eastern End of India. It is named after the Naga tribes which form the majority of its population. It is mainly a tribal state, a home for many tribes having their own culture, traditions and customs. Each of the major tribes has its own unique designs and colors, producing shawls, shoulder bags, decorative spears, table mats, wood carvings and bamboo works. After independence, the area remained a part of the province of Assam until 1963, when it was announced as a full flagged state. The capital is Kohima. Nagaland is known as “The most populated Baptist state in the world” having about 90% of its population following Christianity. The Christian missionaries played an important part in converting Nagaland’s Naga tribes in Christianity. Almost complete state is covered with dense forests of palms, bamboo and rattan as well as timber and mahogany trees.
