Dimapur, March 21 : A delegation of the Tenyimi Peoples’ Organization today visited the acting president of the Naga Club at Khonoma village.
The visit was part of TPO’s effort to “collect and preserve Naga history and also to acknowledge the contribution made by the members of the Naga Club toward the Nagas and its struggle for a separate nation”, the TPO informed in a note.
During the interaction, the acting president of the Naga Club Khrisavisie Hieme who is in his mid 90s told the team that he was compelled to take up the post after the expiry of the then president late. Azheto.
While expressing his concern on the need to revamp and revive the historic Naga Club, he also proudly said that one of the major achievements of the club was the constitution of the Naga National Council (NNC) in the mid 40s.
“This has resulted in bringing the contiguous Nagas under one umbrella,” TPO said. Naga Club which was formed by collective Naga intellectuals had been in the limelight of Naga history, for spearheading the Nagas in its struggle for a separate nation.
The historic memorandum demanding for separate Naga nation submitted to the Simon Commission in 1929 was made by the Naga Club as well as the historic May 16, 1951 Naga Plebiscite was initiated by it.
