Dimapur | March 29 : Dimapur police today morning captured a highway looter red-handed near the Patkai Christian College Bridge in Dimapur while  in a separate crime incident, a vehicle lifter was nabbed following an incident where a Bolero and a Scorpio were stolen.
Lately looting of night buses plying along the stretch of National Highway 39 by armed miscreants have been posing a threat to passengers and a challenge to the police. According to police, one Riangan Tangkhul, 32, a self styled “sergeant” of the NSCN (IM), was apprehended along with one SLR (Gun No. 16163356) and 16 rounds of live ammunition.
Diphupar police personnel arrested Tangkhul while committing the crime, police said. It was informed that the accused, with two accomplices, was wearing a camouflage outfit and was in the process of looting passengers of a Zunheboto-bound Dimapur night bus (NL-11-1392) near the Chumukedima Police check gate when the police caught up. On receiving information at around 3:40 am, Diphupar police swung into action and in course,   some rounds of bullets were fired. The culprit was captured while his accomplice managed to escape. Police also recovered some cash and mobile phones from the accused.  Police said the gang has not only looted the said bus, but other buses as well the same night. With this arrest, police claimed that the quandary of looting along the stretch of National Highway 39 would be ‘solved very soon’.
In a separate incident, the Poumai Hoho informed of five armed thieves who, at gunpoint, took off with two Mahindra – a Bolero and a Scorpio – on the night of February 3 at Toulazii in Dimapur. One of the thieves was apprehended and the Scorpio recovered by police.
In a note today, the Poumai Hoho said the arrested robber has revealed the names of his accomplices, with one of them said to be from a Naga underground faction. The hoho’s note did not specify the name of the underground faction. The hoho has asked the competent authorities to exert their utmost to bring the miscreants to justice and punishment, without fear or favor. The “particular Naga underground faction” is also asked to cooperate with the police in bringing the robbers to justice. This should be done so to show the Naga public that “they will not spare any wrongdoers and that justice will be done”.
Also, the hoho took serious note that the relatives of the vehicle’s owner are being threatened with dire consequences if the case is not dropped. The hoho has appealed to Naga civil society to assist and cooperate to bring the case  to its ‘logical conclusion’.
Press drivers uneasy

The latest arrest of a highway robber has come as a great relief for drivers, of  vehicles belonging to the local media, who travel to Kohima very early in the morning.
One driver disclosed that a person tried to stop them at the Patkai bridge this morning at around 3:30 AM. There were two other vehicles belonging to other newspapers, he informed. However, the driver said he did not stop and sped away.  Interestingly, he said,  this is not the first time that drievrs from the media have been stopped by anti-social elements.
“It would be good if the police could provide us security at least from 3 mile area till Chumu gate,” said the driver.
The Additional SP of Dimapur, VZ Angami, when contacted said that with the latest arrest, the incidents of highway robberies will ultimately come down. He said the police are ready to react to any such situations in the future at ‘any time’.
