Shillong (24/7 News Network): The Meghalaya government plunged into a fresh political crisis, after Urban Affairs Minister Paul Lyngdoh resigned from the government to join the Congress Party. Earlier, two independent MLAs, Limison Sangma and Ismail R Marak, withdrew support to the NCP-led government in Meghalaya and joined the Congress. Both Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) and the Congress now have 30 members each in the 60-member Assembly. The Congress has begun to form the government in Meghalaya, by toppling the MPA government.The MPA has the support of 30 MLAs including 15 from the NCP, 10 from the UDP and five MLAs from smaller parties. Chief Minister Donkupar Roy has expressed confidence that his government will prove majority on the floor of the house, if required.
The focus has now been shifted to the Raj Bhawan. It will be interesting to see what steps Mehgalaya Governor R S Mooshahary takes in the wake of sudden political crisis in the state. He is likely to ask the government to seek a trust vote in the house.
