The peace efforts, without any inter-factional clashes among the underground groups and the peaceful atmosphere in the state has prompted the state to hold several festivals, even with some national and international events, where many national and international VIPs have visited Nagaland and the people from various Naga tribes are also freely coming out to celebrate their festivals. The Naga Peoples Front (NPF) led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) ruled Government has announced that the state will be known with the theme Nagaland : the Land of Festivals and the National Hornbill Festival as the Festival of Festivals. The State Government is also participating in the festivals of the all 16 tribes of Nagaland with the Government sponsored State Road Shows with an aim to bring closer the people to the administration and to make the people aware about the deeds of the Government towards the benefits of the people. The colourful tribal festival of the Naga tribes in the various towns and district headquarters along with the Road Shows have also attracted number of foreign tourists round the year, who captured the colourful music and dances in their cameras and tested the Naga delicacy of various food items with various types of meats.
Among the two international events, Nagaland hosted the first ever The World Bamboo Day, which will be celebrated in various parts of the world on September 17 every year. The World Bamboo Day was inaugurated by the Vice President Md. Hamid Ansari at the Naga Heritage Village Kisama, about 12 Kms east of Kohima on September 17 and he visited Kigwema village to know the traditional Naga way of life and had talks with Nagaland Cabinet of ministers, bureaucrats, various political parties
, civil societies and mass-based organizations during his three-day stay at Kohima. A day-long seminar on Bamboo for Community and livelihood was also held at Kisama on September 16, where bamboo experts from abroad and country took part.
The week-long National Hornbill Festival also held at Kisama from December one, coinciding with the 47th Statehood Day that day, was participated by many international and national artistes and all the eight North Eastern States took part in number of events. US Consul General Beth A. Payne and Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma were also the Chief Guests of two events. Over seven thousand tourists, including around three thousand foreign tourists witnessed the seven-day long showcase of Naga tribes and international events.
Other VIPs who visited the state are Australian High Commissioner, the Ambassador of Thailand Krit Kraichitti on February 4, Union Minister of Mines and DoNER Bijay Krishna Handique, Union Minister of State for Rural Development Agatha Sangma, Tripura Governor Dr.
D. Y. Patil on July 18 and some top Army officials.
Another National event, the 2nd North Eastern Region Agri Expo 2010 was held at Dimapur from December 15 to 19, which was inaugurated by BK Handique and the Chief Guest of the Valedictory function was Agatha Sangma, which was attended many agro-scientists of the country and farmers of the eight states of NE Region, which was a very successful event and beneficial for the farmers of the region. North Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (NEZCC) also organized the North East Spring Festival 2010 at Dimapur on March 5.
In the political front, the NPF maintained its dominance by winning the lone Rajya Sabha seat through the DAN consensus candidate Khekiho Zhimomi in the election held here on March 26. The DAN Government led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, was stable without any internal problem throughout the year. The Opposition Congress was busy infighting among various lobbies of the party throughout the year. The election for the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee President was announced on September 17, but violence marred the election as the ballot box was snatched and destroyed, re-election was held on October 6 amidst arsoning of the Youth Congress Office by razing it to ashes and volley of blank gunfire around the Congress Bhavan. However, in the election senior leader SI Jamir was elected defeating his lone rival I Imkong. There was also a great loss to the NPCC when its sitting MLA Nungshizenba passed away on November 29.
In the insurgency scenario, several rounds of meeting of all underground faction was organized by FNR including a summit of the top leaders of the rebel groups at Dimapur on September 18. The FNR, with the help of NGOs and churches, is still trying to bring all the rebel groups to a common platform through reconciliation and preparing for another summit of top Naga rebel leaders at the soonest possible. In a positive development the Naga National Council (NNC) led by S. Singnya group unconditionally merged with NSCN (K) in the Monyakshu conclave in Mon district on July 15, while the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) group led by its General Secretary V. Nagi also unconditionally merged with NSCN (K) on December 14 at Khehoyi Camp, the designated camp of NSCN (K).
NSCN-IM General Secretary Th. Muivah, who planned to visit his native village Somdal under Ukhrul district of Manipur in the first week of May, could not be able to visit due to strict resistance of the Manipur Government, although he visited some of the areas of the state and met the general public to know their views on Naga political problem. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio met Muivah when the later was in Viswema village near Kohima and newly appointed interlocutor of Naga problem RS Pandey (appointed on February 4) along with Union Home Secretary GK Pillai also met Muivah at Viswema to discuss on his Somdal visit. Naga political movement got a jolt following the death of one of the senior Naga movement leader and Vice President of NSCN-IM Khodao Yanthan on March 1. In two separate incidents in the same day, one NSCN (K) cadre was killed in an inter-factional clash in Mekokla village under Wokha district and one NSCN-IM cadre was killed by security forces during eviction of an unauthorized camp at Tizit under Mon district on August 26.
In media, oldest English daily Nagaland Post, published from Dimapur, completed 20 years of their service to the people of the state on December 3. Chief Minister Rio expressed gratitude to the Nagaland media which also played a good role for the creation of awareness programme of HIV/AIDS initiated by the Nagaland State AIDS Control Society and gave extensive publicity of the World Bamboo Day, National Hornbill Festival and North Eastern Region Agri Expo.
Over two hundred journalists from outside the states visited Nagaland to give coverage of news of the events, he said.
Three major accidents occurred in Nagaland during the year. One Indian Army helicopter crashed near Dzukou valley in Puliebadze Range of Hills on August 18, where three officials including one Colonel and two Majors of Indian Army lost their lives. Nagaland State Transport bus rolled down from the road to a gorge near Chetheba on its way to Pfutsero under Phek district on August 11 and in the other incident one Taxi rolled down off the road near Sub-Divisional headquarters Tseminyu under Kohima district killing five person on the spot on the eve of Christmas. A major forest fire broke out in the Dzukou valley on January 4, which destroyed a huge forest area with valuable flora and fauna.
The Queen's Baton Rely for the Commonwealth Games of Delhi arrived Kohima on July 25 and stayed for three days during its journey to the North Eastern States.
