Naga women propose strategies for gender equity

Kohima, Oct 14 : A two-day seminar on 'Securing Women's Rights - Challenges and Strategies' held at Kohima, has proposed to carry out campaign, movement and other strategies to reform customary practices and recommended to document all customary practices of all tribes in Nagaland that is related to women.

The two-day long Seminar organized by the Northeast Network, which concluded last evening at the LCS Conference Hall at Kohima, also forwarded the recommendations to the State Government for Human Rights and Gender Sensitization of institutions, judicial system, parallel courts, community leaders and the churches.

It had also called for creation of free legal and cells for women in all districts and sub-divisions and provision of short stay homes and other allied services.

The seminar further urged sensitization on protection officers, service providers, implementation of Right To Information (RTI) and Social Security Acts, awareness of RTI Act and Social Security Act, legal awareness for civil society groups as well as effective implementation of Village Development Board Act to ensure representation of women in critical members and if necessary, the relevant acts should be amended to this effect.
