Nagaland Govt to hold Consultative Meet with civil societies

Kohima, Sep 30 : The Government of Nagaland will hold a Consultative Meet with civil societies, tribal hohos, women's groups, stakeholders, intellectuals, policy makers and prominent citizens at the Naga Heritage Village on October 8.

An official release issued here last night by Nagaland Chief Secretary Lalthara said the Consultative Meet would focus on issues of vital importance for the people of the state, mainly pertaining to the land of the people and its use.

''As the state embarks on the path of rapid development, it is important that the society resolve the divergent interests of the landowners and those of the public,'' the statement said.

Another related issue to be discussed is the desirability of regulating the continuing the private interests even after the land is taken over by the Government for public purposes.

The other major area in focus would be the elections to the urban local bodies and reservation for women in urban local bodies.

''Election to urban local bodies, being a relatively recent phenomenon, the legal and institutional framework for constitution, continuation and dissolution of the elected local bodies needs to be harmonized with the constitutional provisions. Similarly, a consensus needs to be evolved on reservation for women in these local bodies in the light of mandatory constitutional provisions for women reservation in urban local bodies,'' the statement said.

''Since these issues are being debated in various forums without a consensus, a need is felt to call this consultative meet to make a sincere effort and evolve a broad consensus on all these specific issues in presence of resource persons drawn from a cross section of the society,'' the Cheif Secretary stated.

The valedictory session is likely to be graced by Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L Imchen.
