Music of the Nagas to entertain Bangalore

The Ants Cafe has started an initiative, to promote the Nagas art and culture in Bangalore. Through a series of events they hope to create a space for discourse on the northeast region, through book readings, film screenings, and musical evenings
Mysterious, exotic and melodious- are some of the terms used to describe the music of northeast. The folklores and music is passed down from one generation to the other and so the Nagas has music inbred in them.

They play a common musical instrument 'Petu',Theku a string instrument and a wind instrument – flute. Guitar is gaining popularity and is in vogue in Nagaland today. To promote Nagas art and culture in Bangalore, the ants’ café is holding a musical event on June 12 which will showcase various artists from northeast.

This initiative is started because time and again, there is a need to “mainstream” the “northeast”. Events in the northeast region such as bombings and killings, militancy, ethnic violence, malaria, floods and corruption do not seem to help the cause either and only seem to reinforce the negative image about the northeastern region.

The core team of the ant feels there is a need to turn this around.  There is a need to “northeastise” the mainstream.  There is enough beauty, strength, resilience, character and cultural traditions in our communities here that others can learn from. It would be tragic if the region were to lose its positive character to become “mainstream” like the rest of India.

Instead, the ants store has started an initiative, Bringing Positive stories from the north-east. Through a series of events that will be held at the ants store café they hope to create a space for discourse on the northeast region, through book readings, film screenings, musical evenings, food festivals, etc.

The event brings together a bunch of talented Naga musicians from Nagaland and Manipur.

The Artists:  Veileo Albert , Jonah, Anato Shohe, Nikolo Nikki, Washington
The Music: The evening would showcase Folk songs of the tribes – Poumai, Rongmei, Sema & Chakesang. And would also include contemporary English songs which are a huge part of Naga music since the Past few decades.
