Manipur DGP asked to produce student leader

IMPHAL, June 6 – A Division Bench of the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench on Friday directed once again the Manipur Director General of Police to produce David Choro, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) president, before the Court within 10 days, legal sources said.

DGP Yumnam Joykumar Singh attending the Court assured before the Gauhati High Court bench that all possible steps including declaring David Choro, ANSAM president as proclaimed offender and also for declaring him as a wanted person with a prize on his head will be taken up within a week’s time from June 4, it added.

Manipur DGP appeared in person before the Court today for rendering necessary assistance in taking steps for producing David Choro. The Court once again directed him to produce the student leader on June 16 after considering the DGP’s assurance.

The Division Bench of the High Court comprising Justice TNK and Mutum BK Singh issued the ruling after hearing the petition filed by one RK Joysana. The Court also asked Senior Government Advocate Th Ibohal to report to the Court about the action taken by the DGP.

Due to the blockade which entered the 54th day on Saturday, essential commodities have become quite scarce in Manipur leading to sharp increase in the prices.

Joysana’s petition said ANSAM imposed the indefinite economic blockade on NH-39 and NH-53 from April 6 demanding amendment of the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council (3rd Amendment) Act, 2008. Contending that resorting to Highway blockades in pursuit of some demands from the government was illegal, it said the indefinite blockade is anti-national.
