Nagas want PM to intervene

Imphal, May 19 : Four Naga civil society organisations of Manipur today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to allow NSCN (I-M) leader Th. Muivah to visit his homeland in Ukhrul and also institute to a judicial inquiry into the firing at Mao Gate on May 6 in which two students were killed.
The United Naga Council, the apex organisation of the Naga community in Manipur, Naga Women’s Union, Manipur, All Naga Students Association Manipur and Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister.
The memorandum said the Centre had not honoured its commitment to their leader.
It said the “brutal crackdown” on peaceful protesters at Mao Gate on May 6 defiled the sanctity of democracy.
It charged that the state forces looted and damaged property and the continued presence of security forces at Mao in Senapati district had displaced thousands of Naga villagers.
The Naga groups demanded a judicial inquiry into the May 6 incident, immediate lifting of Section 144 of the CrPC from Senapati district, withdrawal of IRB personnel and police commandos from Naga areas and lifting the ban on Muivah’s visit to his native village.
Copies of today’s memorandum were also sent to interlocutor R.S. Pandey, Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat and Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio.
The organisations had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the sub-divisional officer of Tadubi of Senapati district urging the Centre to intervene in the situation.
