Manipur govt, political parties want Nagaland govt to act responsibly

Imphal, May 20 : The Manipur government, Opposition parties and NGOs of the state have called upon the Nagaland government to act responsibly to help tide over the crisis in Manipur.

Due to prolonged economic blockade by Naga students and crisis in the state following NSCN(IM) leader Th Muivah's plan to come to Manipur, life has been disrupted in the state.

''National Highways are national property and the Nagaland government should stop thinking it is the sole property of Nagaland,'' said N Biren, Spokesperson of the Manipur government.

Seven political parties - Manipur People's Party (MPP), NCP, CPI(M), RSP, Forward Bloc, Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) and JD(S) - had held a convention yesterday to discuss the situation and held Union Home Minister P Chidambaram responsible for the crisis.

''Mr Chidambaram took a unilateral decision to allow Th Muivah to enter Manipur without knowing the ground realities,'' they said and demanded his resignation.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had also lobbied in New Delhi to allow Muivah to visit Manipur, they alleged.

The Manipur government, political parties and the people of the state suspect the role of Th Muivah and NSCN(IM) in the economic blockades, they said.

The blockades and stir have been called by frontal organisations of NSCN(IM) in Manipur, O Joy, MLA of the Manipur People's Party, said.

Mr Biren said the state government is opposing the visit of Th Muivah and alleged that the NSCN(IM) was trying to disintegrate Manipur.

Meanwhile, the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) publicity secretary NC Modhuchandra alleged that NSCN(IM) cadres were freely extorting on the national highways. AMUCO also appealed to NSCN leaders to stop issuing statements based on communal lines.
