Jumping at Bob Marley’s spin

Long, long before terminology such as “rebel” and “revolutionary” became anti-social, corrupt and dirty words, there was born a man who put to lyrics the fundamental essence of real-time ‘Revolutionary.’ Bob Marley was the man. The man and his catalytic songs of redemption will be celebrated at the Dimapur music hangout, Jumping Bean, from 6:30 PM, Saturday February 6. Across the globe, millions will be celebrating the man on his 65th birth anniversary, February 6.
Jumping Bean will be having two reggae bands – one each from Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh – playing for the evening’s Bob Marley tribute concert, themed ‘Stir It Up.’ From Shillong will be The Roots Reggae Band and from Arunachal Pradesh, Daniel & The Soul Rebels. The two groups are confirmed to play the concert with Roots Reggae Band taking the main gig.

Music fans from around the world will be staging concerts, take out fund drives and peace marches and of course, the mandatory menu of Bob Marley’s “rebel music” that is his legacy today. Since Marley’s demise in 1981, the day has been for millions of people a solemn date to relive the life of a man whose music has became a reference for oppressed cultures. And for Nagaland, the Jumping Bean tribute concert will be her very first time.
For Keith Wallang – frontman of ten-piece Roots Reggae Band – Marley tributes are not a new indulgence. In fact, the band celebrates Marley’s birth anniversary every year, it is said. Wallang’s most recent Marley tribute was in Manipur’s Imphal in 2008.
Due to unexpected communication problems, an interaction with Roots Reggae Band could not be had even at the time of filing this news report. Their performance is, nonetheless, confirmed with Keith and his group already on way to Dimapur when this news report was being filed.  Arunachal Pradesh’s Daniel & The Soul Rebels reached Dimapur this evening for the Marley gig. Frontman of the band, Daniel Boko talked with The Morung Express.
He said to be looking forward to playing the Marley tribute at Jumping Bean. While Daniel is also not new to Bob Marley concerts (he was there in Imphal’s Bob Marley tribute concert in 2008), the Jumping Bean date will be he and his band’s first in Nagaland. But Daniel confided: “We play for fun.” But he admitted that the gig will be a challenge for Daniel & The Soul Rebels to entertain a Naga audience. Why? “We have heard so much that Nagas are very good in music,” he replied.
On a more General Knowledge level, while basically Reggae music, ‘Roots Reggae’ is considered a subgenre of Reggae itself. Roots Reggae is described as the more spiritual face of Jamaica’s music “religion,” Rastafarism. Roots Reggae’s thematic musical expressions find inspiration in Rastafarian spirituality, social issues and oppression, aside from Rastafari. Bob Marley is considered the chief proponent and pioneer of reggae as encompassed by roots reggae. Modern-day influences of reggae include another sub-genre, Ska.  For Dimapur, the reggae evening at Jumping Bean promises to be an entirely unique experience for many a Naga. More known for their heavily heavy metal addiction than for genres like reggae, the Jumping Bean concert may well be a first step to future Naga reggae bands. Be there.
