Students protest rape in Kohima

Kohima, Mar 5 : Tension prevails in Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland, after today's rally in protest against the alleged rape of a student.

Shopkeepers downed shutters in the morning after hundreds of students took to the streets in Dimapur demanding that the authorities hand over the rapist who is allegedly an illegal Bangladeshi migrant and a second-hand car dealer.

The angry students tried to storm the office of the deputy commissioner, but were stopped by police.

There were also reports of damage to some shops owned by "Bangladeshi migrants" in the New Market area by unruly students.

The incident has added fuel to the ongoing campaign against migrants in the state, particularly in Dimapur.

There were several incidents of rape in the recent past.

The police have arrested one man after allegation of rape of a college student on February 23.

The accused was arrested after the victim had lodged a police complaint. The incident came to be known only after it was highlighted by the media recently.
