Naga students hold candle light vigil in Pune

In protest against incident in Ukhrul town where two innocent civilians were killed and several others injured during a United Naga Council (UNC) rally, the Naga students under the aegis of Naga Students’ Union Pune (NSUP) held a candle light prayer vigil in Pune September 6 last.

In a press release, Naga Students Union Pune president Yotensang Tzudir said the union had initiated the candle light prayer vigil as a sign of solidarity for the bereaved families of the “martyrs” and to pray for “peace and freedom in the land.”

The programme was attended by about 200 Nagas at three different places in the city -- Mount Carmel ground, Janwadi Park and Makaan Hospital Chowk, the release stated.

“We the Nagas in Pune are deeply saddened and disturbed by what is happening back in Ukhrul district of Manipur. We strongly condemn such act of disregard for human life on the part of the security personnel,” said NSUP president and urged the responsible leaders to work for a peaceful and effective remedy to the problem the people in Ukhrul.

“We also want to convey to our dear brothers and sisters in Ukhrul that we stand with you in your fight for self determination and extend our support in whatever ways possible,” said NSUP president.
