Kohima, June 3: Nagaland governor 
Ashwani Kumar presented awards to toppers of higher secondary and degree
 examinations, conducted by the Nagaland Board of School Education and 
Nagaland University for the year 2013, at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, here 
today. 
In his address, the governor said successful students should thank their parents, teachers and be grateful to their alma mater. 
Kumar compared examinations and a 
student’s life to Formula One race. He said victory would depend on the 
driver’s preparation, where the students are the drivers. He said 
victory would also depend on the vehicle and the people who are a part 
of the team. Therefore, selection of vehicles, which means schools and 
colleges, is important in moulding one’s career. 
He said the literacy rate in Nagaland was 
one of the highest in India but the quality of education imparted in 
government schools was gradually going down in the state. 
The governor highlighted the fact that of 
the 55 toppers only nine had emerged from government institutions. He 
said educational schemes were well drafted but the problem lay with the 
implementation process. 
He stressed on the application of modern management techniques in our educational system. 
Kumar said what we become in life is the 
true value of our education and that humility and faith in God and 
one-self should be the guiding principles in life. 
He expressed gratitude to the department of higher and technical education for giving the awards. 
Altogether, 29 toppers were present at the function. All of them were awarded a citation, Rs 10,000 and a laptop. 
The parliamentary secretary of higher 
education, Deo Nukhu, also spoke on the occasion. Commissioner and 
secretary, department of higher and technical education, F.P. Solo, 
delivered the welcome address.
