Nagaland emerges as safest State for women

DIMAPUR, Dec 13 – After introduction of the IT-enabled tracking system for investigation and detection of crime “Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS)” by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the crime status of Nagaland has improved.

Nagaland, according to NCRB (National Crime Record Bureau) report 2012, has been categorised as the “safest State for women”, even as the national statistics for 2012 and 2013 indicate that crimes against women have increased in the country.

Nagaland has the lowest crime rate in India, and in order to sustain the grade under the NCRB, not only should the police be the example but the general public must also join hands in making Nagaland a State with “No crimes”, the NCRB 2012 report said.

But there is no room for complacency. Policing is clearly under pressure as per the crime trends between 2012 and 2013.

Kidnapping and abduction cases under the comparative crime statistics in Dimapur for the year 2012 and 2013 issued by Dimapur SP show that in the year 2012, only 16 cases were registered with 10 cases pending investigation while in 2013, 63 cases have been registered with 61 cases pending investigation.

With the launching of CCTNS in October 2013, the police hopes that it will help in solving these cases before the year end. Eight cases of attempt to murder have been registered in 2013 with four cases pending investigations.

Due to various genuine reasons as well as ignorance, the police investigation has failed to fulfil certain duties.

Seven police stations along with Traffic Police and Women Cell control the whole of Dimapur.

Dimapur SP VZ Angami said Dimapur said it is not possible to control and manage every area with only seven police stations. He also stated that a proposal was given to the Centre through the Police Headquarters, Kohima to streamline the department for more effective functioning of the police in Dimapur.
