Kohima meet discusses clean electoral roll

DIMAPUR, Nov 2 – The second Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign for revision of Electoral Rolls 2013 in Kohima district today discussed the practical line of action in bringing about a clean electoral roll and conducting free and fair State General Election 2013.

Convened by the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima this afternoon, the meeting was attended by representatives of Angami Baptist Churches’ Council (ABCC), Council of Rengma Baptist Churches (CRBC) Zumpha, Angami Youth Organisation (AYO), Nehru Yuva Kendra and print and electronic media.

The meeting deliberated at length on the SVEEP campaign, wherein it was informed about the eligibility of a person to get registered as a voter in the district, Assembly constituency or booth levels.

Briefing the gathering, Kohima DC and District Returning Officer W Honje Konyak said that the main objective of the SVEEP campaign is to help the genuine voters get themselves registered as well as deletion or removal of bogus voters. He said people hardly bother to get themselves registered as a voter even after crossing the age of 18, while some people try to get registered in 3-4 places.

Maintaining that the Election Commission of India has come out with strong directives for a clean election, specially in the State of Nagaland, he said in the past the electoral roll of Nagaland had not been clean because of which even the Photo Electoral Rolls could not be successfully implemented.

He also requested the churches, civil societies and student bodies to join hands with the district administration in preparing a clean electoral roll and also for a clean election in 2013. He made a fervent appeal to those registered in 2-3 places to realize the gravity of the situation and get themselves registered only in one place.
