Blockade continues in Assam-Nagaland border

Continuing its week-long blockade of Nagaland, the All Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (AATTSA) on Monday said it would extend its stir to Sivasagar in upper Assam till the culprits responsible for the March 5 violence in the district are booked.

AATTSA has been blocking roads in Jorhat district since the last one week to protest against the attack on local people by suspected Naga youths at Naginijan Tea Estate at Mariani subdivision of the district on March 5.

AATTSA General Secretary Dheraj Gowola today said the the blockade would now be extended to include the Amgoori-Mokokchang road in Sivasagar district.

"The agitation will not be lifted unless the culprits responsible for the March 5 incident are arrested and handed over to Assam Police," Gowola asserted.

Four districts in northern Nagaland are facing severe shortage of essential commodities as vehicles carrying goods have been stranded in Jorhat district since the last one week.

Meanwhile, Assam and Nagaland officials met yesterday at Mariani College in the district to resolve the impasse.

Speaking after the meeting, Nagaland's Mokokchung district Deputy Commissioner Lithrongla G Chishi said that Mokokchung SP Sonia Singh had been directed to take steps against the culprits immediately.
