Naga factions meet to form ‘national govt’

Kohima, Sept 11 : The Naga factions today had a closed-door meeting without the S.S. Khaplang group of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland at chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s Naithu Resort at Chumukedima near Dimapur.

The meeting was attended by NSCN (I-M) general secretary Thiungaleng Muivah, the chairman and general secretary of NSCN (Khole-Kitovi), Khole Konyak and Kitovi Zhimomi, and FGN (S) president S. Singnya. They were also accompanied by senior members of the outfits.

NSCN (I-M) sources said Muivah along with six senior members attended today’s meeting to work out modalities to form a “Naga National Government” with representatives from the three factions.

Sources said this process would take some time. NSCN (I-M) chairman Isak Chishi Swu and Muivah are expected to leave for New Delhi by Saturday for the next round of Naga talks with representatives of the Centre.

Their plan to visit Zunheboto and Mon districts has been deferred because of the proposed Naga talks.

Swu is from Zunheboto district and Muivah is from Ukhrul district in Manipur.

This is the third time the Naga rebel leaders are meeting at Naithu Resort, but the Khaplang group had accused the Forum for Naga Reconciliation — that is spearheading the reconciliation process among Naga factions — of having a nexus with chief minister Rio.

Envoy to the collective leadership of NSCN (K) Kughalu Mulatonu alleged that convener of the Forum, Rev Wati Aier, was hand in glove with Rio working against the wishes of the Naga people by creating more divisions in Naga society. Mulatonu reiterated that the NSCN (K) was out of the reconciliation process. Speaking to The Telegraph today from his hideout, he said Khaplang had already withdrawn from the reconciliation process.

Reacting to the NSCN (K)’s accusation and allegation, the Forum said its members had met Khaplang five times at his headquarters in Myanmar.

The last meeting was in the first week of June this year. “The Forum has spoken directly to Khaplang 26 times over telephone and furthermore has sent letters and messages through different individuals on 21 instances on matters related to the reconciliation process,” Rev Aier, the convener of the Forum, said.
