Kohima, Aug. 23 : The Nagaland government will set up a ropeway service in Kohima to ease traffic.
The project, Kohima metro cable, will be implemented under the initiative of Nagaland State Transport and the cable work will be carried out by a New Delhi-based company, Leading Edge Adventures and Airparks Pvt Ltd. Feasibility studies have been carried out and the company has submitted a proposal to the government.
Though still in its infant stage, the Kohima metro cable will operate on all routes covering the entire town.
The state government is also hopeful that with the introduction of ropeway, it would generate more revenue for the state’s exchequer.
However, according to government sources, one problem would be power as the project would need uninterrupted power supply which the state may not be able to provide.
The state minister for urban development, Shurhozelie Liezietsu, said there was massive expansion of Kohima and other urban areas in the state, which had added to the traffic congestion in the capital and other towns. He said the ropeway would help ease traffic.
Kohima would also soon be connected by railway from Dimapur. Towns like Naginimora and Tuli in Mon and Mokokchung districts would also be linked with the network.
The state government has decided to create airstrips in Mokokchung, Mon, Tuensang and Meluri. Work for the proposed airport at Kohima would soon begin, while Dimapur airport would be upgraded to international standards.
The government is negotiating with the landowners to procure land near the present airport and construction of helipads at Alichen in Mokokchung, Pfutsero (Phek district), Longleng and Peren district headquarters are on.
The state government inaugurated an inter-state bus terminus at Khensa near Mokokchung recently and the ones at Kohima and Tuensang would be completed soon.
Under the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for the Northeast, all district headquarters would be connected with two-lane roads.
A couple of days back, work on a two-lane road between Phek district headquarters and Pfutsero was started. Special emphasis would been given to the maintenance of National Highways 61, 155 and 39.
