Nagaland to rein in rebels

Kohima, June 17 : Ten militant outfits from the region, apart from the five Naga insurgent groups, are active in Nagaland, unleashing terror in the form of extortion, abduction, ransom and other anti-social activities.
Home minister Imkong L. Imchen today said several militants and terror outfits from the region were operating in Nagaland in connivance with the Naga insurgent groups.
He warned that the state government would act tough against these terror outfits.
The 10 non-Naga outfits are DHD (N), DHD (J), Kuki Revolutionary Army, People’s Liberation Front, United People’s Democratic Solidarity, Gorkha Liberation Army, People’s United Liberation Front, Adivasi National Liberation Army, National Democratic Front of Boroland and United Liberation Front of Asom.
The five Naga outfits are NSCN (I-M), NSCN (K) and the NNC/FGN groups.
The home minister also said apart from these outfits there were several others operating in the state.
This year alone, 10 Ulfa cadres, two KCP, 13 KRA, one Prepak, 31 UPDS, eight PLA, eight PULF, one GLA, two UDRA and 65 other militants belonging to outfits of the Northeast, have been arrested in the state. They have been booked under the National Security Act.
Imchen said these militants were being harboured by the Naga groups and were collecting illegal taxes from the business establishments.
“These non-Naga groups are operating in connivance with the Naga groups,” the home minister told The Telegraph.
He said the Nagas couldn’t afford to let this situation continue.
“The extortion activities carried out by these outfits are beyond tolerable limits,” Imchen said.
He said the terror outfits were “sucking the blood and sweat of the Naga people” for their survival.
The state government is raising a special commando unit to tackle the “special situation” in the state.
Imchen said with the formation of the commando unit, it could tackle the terror elements operating in Nagaland.
The home minister welcomed the declaration of the Naga militant groups to reconcile and sort out all the outstanding issues in the greater interest of the people and above all to settle the long-drawn Naga political problem with Delhi.
