The wrestler’s diet: Veterans share food for thought

Phek | March 4 : Tenyimi Nagas has another reason to get together for more sports with the forthcoming ‘6th Naga Open Wrestling Championship’ which is scheduled to be held at Khuochiezie (Kohima Local ground) on March 14 next under the sponsorship of the Angami Sports Association (ASA).
Naga style wrestling, an indigenous and traditional sports events of the Nagas specially for the Tenyimi Nagas, is all set to organized within a short span of time; an important event where mutual relationships were built from among the community, people from different corners started mentioning the prominent wrestlers including the veterans. The story of the forthcoming championship was reported becoming the hot conversation of different corners especially in the “Zutho Houses” (local beer wine houses).
Interacting with this media correspondent recently at Kikruma village, during the 29th PDSA Meet, and subsequently at Phek, the three veteran wrestling champions, Huvesü Puro, Vekriyi Chüzho and Hukhonieyi Soho share their experiences and in the meantime suggested some sort of advise to the talented youths who determine to pursue in the field of wrestling events.
6th Naga Open Wrestling Championship on March 14When queried of how they managed the expenses of their food routine and other requirements for a continuation of approximately five months, all of them response almost the same; ‘I don’t know how my dad could managed to feed me with all my requirements despite no financial source of income apart from his earning from sweat and toils, anyway I strongly believe that it was the unseen blessings God bestowed upon’. Ask what way of dieting they consume? Unlike other friends, I don’t object any healthy food which gave me strength, I specially take pork, dog, chicken and some sort meat of wild animals, disclosed Hukhonieyi Soho adding that local gum rice cooks in the form of tea (Thu caha) was my favourite and my optional diet as well, Puro and Chuzho being from the same community further that they had no much say beyond that.
In a separate interaction with Soho, he said wrestling is also equally important with that of education and economic in this present scenario, Soho commented, we were being told that today young and talented wrestlers were being ill-equipped with lack of determination and indiscipline in their pursues. To be professional in concerned, one need to struggle to achieve the desiring goals, like wise, a wrestlers should keep regular practice so as to keep the body fit, Soho continue, adding that we loss in game for we could not maintain our stamina in a stable manner. Soho is also of the view that discipline and punctuality is the main weapons of every sports be it of wrestling, athletic or whatsoever, he added that young talented sports persons were found to be lacked with the basic weapons in their pursue.
Diet is one of the most important especially for wrestlers. Nagas as usual still had the mentality of consuming the large quantity of meat; however, to my experience taking a reasonable quantity of soup rather than its flesh one can stay healthy and in the meantime be able to keep his/ her body fit with good stamina in the long run. Consumption of alcohols and other abuse substances largely affects ones life, he suggested that, keeping one away from those instincts will uplifts an individual lives.
Hukhonieyi Soho, the two times Champion of Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) tournament and the champion of the 1st Naga Open Wrestling (NOW) championship is presently serving as the PET in the Government High School (GHS), Phek village, he was reported to had won as NWA champion in 1988 and after taking a break he again retain the title in 1996, also bagged the champion title of the 1st Naga Open Wrestling Championship in 1994 organized by the Royal Club, Kohima. Soho who hails from Phek Village is the 2nd eldest son of Niekhuhü Soho, he is the elder bother of Surhonieyi Soho, who is preparing to participate in the forthcoming championship. Huvesü Puro, Son of Kuhuso Puro hails from Porba Village, Puro the 2 times champions of NWA & NOW championship is presently serving as PET in government middle school, Sohomi village. He was reported to have won NWA in 2002 & 2004 and NOW in 2001 & 2003. Vekriyi Chüzho, son of Hupotso Chuzho, hails from Phusachodumi Village, Chüzho, the current NWA champion (2008) was also the champion of NOW in 2007 he was reported to have served in Forest department as Forest Guard, Phek. Ask whether he still wish to fight for the coveted title, “If my health permits I wish to be part in the forthcoming event, the ‘6th NOW championship to be held on 14th March 2009’; however I can’t give any assurance as of now,” responded Vekriyi.
