Kohima | March 18: Surhonieyi Soho has finally fulfilled his long-cherished dream of winning the coveted champion title in the 6th Open Naga Wrestling Meet 2009 in Kohima recently. Since his involvement in Naga wrestling arena in 2003, he has been blessed with abundant achievements, credit for which, he said, goes to God’s blessing, support of well-wishers and his parents.

At village-level wrestling events, Soho is three-time champion during 2004, 2006, and 2008 and for another equal number of championship titles at the Phek-area level.

Surhonieyi Soho told The Morung Express that he had experienced a gloomy life seven years ago where he had even used drugs and other intoxicants. In 2000, he came into conclusion that the continuance of the habits would only bring him a bleak future. He realized that success and recognition is unattainable without God’s love and blessing.

Then, ‘a blissful and successful life favored him that he got strength to abandon old habits that surrounded him and spoiling his life’. Presently, he is associated with church ministry as a Sunday school teacher in Phek village Baptist church.

He wants to tell the people that one can do miracles through God’s love and blessing and at the same time he urged youngsters to avoid bad habits and come nearer to God to excel.

For him, to become a prominent sportsperson and to excel in life, one has to fear God and ‘avoid bad habits’; Respect for elders and parents also play an essential role in helping youngsters achieve their desired goals, he said.

On being asked for his opinion on Nagaland state’s sports policy and also sportspersons awards, he was appreciative of the government for taking steps to encourage sports persons and take them to a higher-level.

Soho said he will take wrestling on professional line and he wishes to participate again “if health permits.”
