Border: Assam Police and CRPF at it again

Dimapur, February 14 : The sector commander of 142 Bn and the post commander of the CRPF at Liphanyan on February 5 are reported to have intruded into Liphanyan village, the Governor’s Camp village under Wokha bordering with Assam. The CRPF and Assam police force intruded into the area looking for some local youths of the village over a “misunderstanding” with “miyas” or illegal immigrants.

According to the Governor’s Camp Area Villages’ Union, when the Assam Police and CRPF combined force failed to “arrest” the youths of the village, public members and even village council members were harassed and forced to answer “unnecessary queries”.

This has caused ‘mental harassment’ on the village, the union lamented in a note received here today.

The note also informed of a similar incident of harassment meted out to the village last year in September, by the same CRPF commanders and Assam police personnel. A local contractor, from Liphanyan village was arrested by the sector commander of the 142 Bn CRPF C-Sector at Uriamghat and the post commander of the CRPF at Liphanyan.

They, along with Assam police personnel “arrested” a local contractor, one Nchubomo Ovung of Liphanyan village on September 8. He was “arrested” from Sosorutchu River while two of his hired elephants, a number of logs and other materials were seized from him.

The only reason was that, the contractor failed to give the CRPF post commander at Liphanyan the logs he forcibly demanded.

The matter could be settled with the intervention of the village elders and council members but only after a bribe of Rs. 7, 000 was paid to the crooked CRPF personnel.

The village cast doubts on the role of the CRPF posted in the so-called “Disputed Area Belt”. The activities of this CRPF is well known as a ‘pro-Assam’ force and not “neutral” as claimed, the union lamented.

Narrating these incidents of constant harassment, the villages have urged the competent authorities in concern to look into the situation at the border. Strong policy measures have been appealed for, by the union so that the public of the area would have peace.
