India’s racism under scanner

Dimapur, October 29: Naga Organizations from Manipur today denounced what they said is the constant assault on North East people, particularly women in Delhi. The United Naga Council, All Naga Students’ Association, Naga Women Union of Manipur and NPMHR (south) issued a joint statement against the “many such barbaric mindsets of the mainland Indian adults infused much racial discrimination tinged with castiest prejudice towards the people of North Eastern Region.”
The murder of Ramchanphy Hongray on October 24 is a clear reflection of the deviant mindset, the organizations stated. “Besides it equally disagrees with the defensive remarks of the Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police to the nature of the crime that had been perpetrated by the accused, terming it as another isolated ‘obsessive compulsive disorder’ case.
No matter what the gravity of the crime is, it is a crime against humanity and the culprit should not be given leniency under any exemptible pretext,” the statement said.
The Government of Delhi and the Government of India, the organizations also said, should be “ashamed of the obnoxious crimes on the rise especially discriminations against women before their doorstep.” The Naga civil society will not hesitate to question the Indian authority as to whether the people of North Eastern Region are lesser humans, they said.
The organizations have demanded from the Government of India proper mechanisms be put into place to provide security and restore confidence in the rule of law. The northeast people continue to be oppressed, suppressed and alienated by the castiest psyche imbedded in the Indian ruling class, it said.
The NE people are also urged to join in solidarity to resist the “systematic policy” to make the regions community a subservient category in the modern Indian society. “The response from the concern Delhi authority has been predominantly racist to the northeasterner all these years of post independent India era and the insensitivity of the state policy to the attitude of racial arrogance of the dominant community so far makes it a party to the crimes being perpetrated thus far,” it stated.
Further, the international community is urged to take note that the Indian state is basically mouthing democracy while the common northeasterners are subject to senseless violence. “Back in northeast hinterlands, the people are being ‘domesticated’ through militarization for more half a century where as they dominant society willingly allows the tentacles of casteism and prejudice to rule the so call civilized metro city of India,” it added.
